NTU shows outstanding performance in 2009 National Robotics Contest

Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) Teams from National Taiwan University (NTU) were the big winners in the 2009 National Robotics Contest, winning two of the three championships, a sponsor of the competition said Monday.

The contest was held at the Taipei International Robot Show, sponsored by the Industrial Development Bureau, the Taiwan Shin Kong Security (SKS security) and HIWIN Technologies Corp., held by the Precision Machinery Research Development Center and directed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Ministry of Education.

It was divided into three main themes: home service robots, intelligent robotic arms and security robots. The purpose of the contest was to incite student creativity, discover new talent and stimulate academic and industry cooperation, with the aim of spurring robot industry development in Taiwan. The 102 teams were competing for prize money totaling NT$3.18 million (US$971,140).

The NTU teams won the Intelligent Security Robot Contest held by SKS securities and the Intelligent Robotic Arm Contest held by HIWIN Technologies Corp.

Team Rambo, which won the championship, explained that their security robot was tailor-made for the competition. It is a multi- sensor fusion-based wheeled robot equipped with remote control, motion planning, obstacle avoidance, image transmit and processing, automatic message sending, environment detection and voice detection.

In addition, the robot can also detect unauthorized intruders.

Team Adam, the other winning NTU team, won the Intelligent Robotic Arm competition.

Taiwanese students have displayed ever-increasing expertise in robot technology. In 2007, seven top awards were won by Taiwanese students in the World Robot Olympiad, and the following year, 12 medals were won at an international mini-robot contest in Japan.
